Why the hurry? - 2008/04/22 03:01 Seems like there is an awful hurry amoung competitors to move up and through the divisions like wildfire! Just wondering why folks don't take the time with themselves and their horses to compete successfully in the lower levels prior to moving on. There is no shame in staying under Training level, Novice, Beginner Novice until the time comes that horse/rider wishes to "climb the ladder" if in fact that is their goal at all. Been to one too many a horse trial, seeing scary XC rides with either horse or rider ill prepared in a division they are not ready for. With all that is going on with rider/horse injuries and deaths....either due to over ambitious course designers, owners selling horses with a bigger price tag due to competing in a two star, trainers pushing students to quickly, etc.......shouldn't we all just take a chill pill? Kind of a neat thought.....take time to get the ABC's down, let horse and rider gain some confidence and experience some fun, take the time to reevaluate the pair's progress, choose goals (both short and long term), and equip them for safe and victorious rides. Just a thought....and I know what they say about opinions.

Re:Why the hurry? - 2008/04/30 17:44 Having read the stuff out of the USEA today, the joint letter from David and Kevin, yes you have to wonder what action they can do that will change the mentality of competitors. Rather than the courses.

Thats not an easy thing to do. Not to belittle the sport but to fully prevent these things from happening they need to stop the CC all together, radical I know.

Suspending riders for 30 days wont mean anything if they are in hospital with more serious injuries.

Ok preventing CC from going ahead is not going to happen but certainly some rather strong changes need to occur to alter the mindset of the riders, which is currently, ride faster and jump higher as soon as we can.

Re:Why the hurry? - 2008/08/17 09:51 I know a lot has been said on this safety subject over the past months since this thread started but having just seen the ESPN story has prompted me to add to this.

The too much of a hurry to move up is so valid I think. You can partake in this sport for a very long time, there is no age barrier to being the best. Some of those Olympic riders are testament to that. Gee look at Karen OC for instance, she is now 50 years old.

What also i liked about the ESPN piece was Denny's comment about paper-mache' (sp) jumps. It sort of lends itself towards CC becoming more like showjumping where hitting a fence and bringing it down would cause a loss of points but wouldnt risk your life or that of your horse.

That has to be something worth looking into.
